The closest are in Torrey, Utah, the gateway town on the western side, which holds around ten hotels and motels plus a dozen more cabins, inns and glamping sites across the surrounding valley. Are there hotels inside Capitol Reef National Park?

No. There is no hotel, motel or lodge inside the park boundary. The only lodging inside Capitol Reef National Park is the Fruita campground and backcountry camping, which needs a free permit from the visitor center.

Every property advertised as being "in Capitol Reef" is in one of the surrounding towns. That is not a trick, it is just how this park works, and it means the real question is which town to base yourself in rather than which in-park hotel to book.

Where are the closest hotels to the park?

Torrey, Utah. It is the gateway town on the western side and holds almost all of the area's hotels and motels. Everything in the first list below is in or immediately around it.

Beyond Torrey, Utah, Bicknell and Loa have a few rooms each and are further out, and Hanksville sits on the eastern side of the park, which is a long drive from the main scenic area but useful if you are coming from Goblin Valley or Moab.

How far in advance should you book?

Further than you think, if you are coming in autumn. September and October are the busiest weeks in Capitol Reef Country and the town does not have many rooms in total, so the whole market tightens at once rather than filling one property at a time.

Winter is the opposite problem. It is the quietest season and, for night sky, arguably the best one, but a good share of local lodging closes for it. Check dates rather than assuming availability.

Should you stay in town or outside it?

In town if you want dinner within walking distance and the shortest drive to the visitor center. Outside it if the night sky is a reason you are coming. Torrey holds an International Dark Sky Community certification, so its lighting is already better than most towns, but the further you get from any lighting at all the more you see.

That trade is the whole reason this property is where it is. We are in Teasdale, Utah, 4 miles from Torrey, Utah and about 9 miles from the park boundary, on open land rather than on a main street.
