Stargazing Domes near Capitol Reef National Park

Glamping under the dark sky. Yurts, tipis and a dome this winter; domes with a curved glass wall for 2027.

Capitol Reef is a certified International Dark Sky Park and Torrey is a certified Dark Sky Community, and these are the rooms built for that. This winter the six glamping units take guests: three tipis, two yurts and one dome, each sleeping two, each with its own private bathroom a short walk from the structure. For the 2027 season the shells are replaced by geodesic domes with one wall of curved tempered glass, floor to ceiling, so the valley and the sky above it become the view from the bed.

What you sleep in this winter

Three tipis, two yurts and one dome, on the same bench below the cliffs. Each is a single space for two people with its own assigned bathroom a short walk away. They are the structures the property has run for years, not the glass domes, and we would rather you know that before you book than after you arrive. What they share with the domes to come is the thing that matters most: the sky. Step outside on a moonless night and the Milky Way is over the mesas.

You do not have to get out of bed

That is the whole point of the format, and it is the thing people underestimate until they have done the alternative. Stargazing normally means an alarm, boots, a coat and twenty minutes standing in the cold at 7,000 feet in February. Here one wall of the dome is tempered glass, floor to ceiling, curving with the structure, and the bed faces it. The valley is the view by day and on a moonless night the Milky Way sits over the mesas, from under the covers.

It is a wall, not a roof

Worth being plain about, because plenty of dome photography implies otherwise: the glass is one curved wall facing out, and the rest of the shell is solid over the top. You are looking out and up through it, not straight overhead through a ceiling. That is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise. A dome glazed all the way over is a greenhouse in July and a fridge in January, at an elevation that does both properly.

The bathroom is outside the dome

Each dome has its own private bathroom, assigned to that unit and used by nobody else, but it sits a short walk from the structure rather than inside it. That is a real trade and worth knowing before you book. If you want a bathroom you can reach without putting shoes on, The Lodge has five guest bedrooms and every one of them is en-suite.

Why a dome here rather than a room

Capitol Reef was certified a Gold-tier International Dark Sky Park in 2015 and Torrey became a certified Dark Sky Community in 2018, the first national park gateway town in the United States to manage it. The lighting protection carries past the park boundary into the valley. A dome is the room built for that: it puts a wall of glass between you and the darkest sky most people will ever stand under, and then gets out of the way.

When the glass domes arrive

The 2027 season. The six units standing today are the same six spots; what changes is the shell, from tipi, yurt and the current dome to a geodesic dome with a curved glass wall. Check which season you are booking into: a stay this winter is in a tipi, a yurt or the existing dome.

What is coming

Visualisations built on drone photographs of the property, not photographs of finished domes. The layout follows our site plan and may still change.

Phase one: six domes on today's sites

For the 2027 season a glass dome replaces each of the six glamping units on the same site, and each keeps its own assigned bathroom a short walk away, as the units have today.

The full build-out: twelve domes

A later phase adds six larger domes on the flat across the road, each with its own bathroom, reached by a new loop road.

The site plan

Proposed site plan: twelve glass domes, six 6 m domes on the existing sites sharing the bathhouse and six larger 8 m and 10 m domes with en-suite baths on a new loop road, with parking bays, the bathhouses and The Lodge. Concept, domes drawn to scale.
Proposed plan, domes drawn to scale. Domes 1 to 6 are on today's sites; 7 to 12 are the later phase. Open full size or download the PDF (11x17).
